Failed to peek collection 'test5': The CHROMA_OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable is not set

I don't understand why this happen, I am using http client connect to chromadb in docker.

npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector uv run chroma-mcp --client-type http --host localhost --port 8000 --ssl 0 --dotenv .env

It should not ask for CHROMA_OPENAI_API_KEY , and I didn't find related code. I have no idea how to fix this .

Hi, this happens when you created a collection with an OpenAI embedding function. when you peek a collection, it builds the collection object, including the embedding function. it's trying to load the OpenAI embedding function, which it's not able to do without the api key. the solution would be to set the CHROMA_OPENAI_API_KEY so that when it fetches the collection it will be able to build the embedding function
